Mohmand Dam: Powering a Sustainable Future for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pakistan

In the heart of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Pakistan is undertaking one of its most ambitious infrastructure projects in recent decades — the Mohmand Dam. This multi-purpose initiative promises to reshape the region’s water management capabilities, boost agricultural output, and strengthen Pakistan’s energy security through clean, renewable power.

Strategic Location on the Swat River

The Mohmand Dam is strategically located on the Swat River, approximately 37 kilometers north of Peshawar and just 5 kilometers upstream of the Munda Headworks in Mohmand District. This placement is not just geographically significant but also essential for controlling seasonal flooding and maximizing hydropower potential in the region.

Multi-Purpose Functionality

Designed as a concrete-faced rock-filled dam (CFRD), Mohmand Dam will serve four primary purposes:

  1. Hydropower Generation:
With an installed capacity of 800 megawatts (MW), the dam is expected to contribute significantly to the national grid, providing clean and sustainable electricity to thousands of households.

  2. Water Supply:
Upon completion, the dam will deliver 300 million gallons of drinking water per day to the residents of Peshawar, helping to combat the city’s growing water scarcity issues.

  3. Irrigation Support:
The dam will enable the irrigation of thousands of acres of farmland, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, thereby supporting food security and agricultural productivity.

  4. Flood Control:
Seasonal flooding along the Swat River has historically damaged infrastructure and displaced communities. The Mohmand Dam will play a vital role in flood mitigation, protecting downstream populations and assets.

Construction Timeline and Current Progress

According to Profit by Pakistan Today, the Mohmand Dam is currently under active construction and is expected to be completed between 2026 and 2027. Despite challenges such as funding delays and regional security concerns, the project is advancing steadily under the supervision of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and various international engineering firms.

Global Significance

Once completed, the Mohmand Dam will rank among the tallest concrete-faced rock-filled dams in the world, a milestone achievement in civil and hydraulic engineering. Its construction is not only a testament to Pakistan’s technical capabilities but also to its growing commitment to renewable energy and sustainable water management.

A Key Step Toward National Resilience

As Pakistan grapples with the impacts of climate change, water scarcity, and rising energy demands, the Mohmand Dam emerges as a critical infrastructure investment. It will enhance water security, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and support agricultural livelihoods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and beyond.

By investing in such large-scale, multi-purpose projects, Pakistan is setting a precedent for long-term, sustainable development — ensuring future generations have access to the resources they need to thrive.

Role of IRTCoP: Enabling Efficient Trade and Transport

While infrastructure projects like the Mohmand Dam strengthen Pakistan’s internal capacity, seamless international trade and logistics are equally vital for economic growth. The International Road Transport Chamber of Pakistan (IRTCoP) plays a pivotal role in this regard by promoting the TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) license framework across the country.

By facilitating TIR operations — a globally recognized customs transit system — IRTCoP enables faster, secure, and cost-effective cross-border transportation. This aligns with Pakistan’s broader development goals, as improved road connectivity and simplified customs procedures support industries, agriculture, and energy sectors in efficiently moving goods across national and international markets.

The integration of modern transport systems with mega infrastructure projects like the Mohmand Dam ensures that Pakistan is not only producing more but also delivering better, building a resilient, trade-enabled future.
