What Are AI Traffic Cameras and How Do They Work?

The new system uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to monitor traffic activity in real time. These cameras are equipped to:

  • Detect Lane Deviation and Unauthorized Turns.
  • Capture number plates using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR)
  • Automatically generate electronic challans (e-tickets)
  • Integrate with the city’s digital traffic management infrastructure

The AI cameras operate 24/7 and are capable of processing large volumes of traffic data, enabling swift and accurate identification of violations.

Deployment Locations

In the initial phase, cameras have been installed at several busy and high-risk intersections, including:

  • Ferozepur Road
  • Canal Road
  • Main Boulevard Gulberg
  • Liberty Chowk

Further expansion is planned across other critical areas in Lahore and other cities within Punjab.

Objectives of the Initiative

This project supports the Punjab government’s broader objective of:

  • Enhancing road safety through automated law enforcement
  • Reducing human error and potential corruption in traffic policing
  • Promoting disciplined driving behavior
  • Collecting accurate traffic data for future infrastructure planning

Public Awareness and Legal Framework

A public awareness campaign is being launched to inform citizens about the functioning and implications of the AI traffic cameras. Legal mechanisms are in place to ensure the validity and enforceability of AI-generated traffic challans under the Punjab Motor Vehicle Rules.

IRTCoP Acknowledges the Initiative

The International Road Transport Chamber of Pakistan (IRTCoP) has acknowledged the implementation of AI traffic cameras and stated that it is proud of the Punjab government’s decision to utilize modern technology for road safety and compliance.

Conclusion

The use of AI cameras at Lahore’s traffic signals marks a significant step in modernizing traffic enforcement in Pakistan. By leveraging advanced technology, the Punjab government is paving the way for smarter, safer, and more efficient urban mobility systems.
