A revolution in Eurasian transit with the activation of the Afghanistan-Iran-Europe railway corridor

presence of Iran’s Consul General in Herat and the Governor of Herat, Afghanistan’s first export shipment via the Afghanistan-Iran railway corridor was dispatched to Turkey and Europe—marking a significant step in transforming Iran into a key transit hub for Eurasia.

In a historic event, the Afghanistan-Iran-Europe international railway corridor officially commenced operations after years of planning and regional cooperation. This project, known as Iran’s “New Silk Road,” connects Afghanistan to the European rail network via Iran, creating a major shift in regional trade and transit.

The 4,200-kilometer corridor begins in Herat, western Afghanistan, passes through Mashhad, Tehran, and Tabriz in Iran, and then connects to the European railway network in Bulgaria via Turkey.

Yesterday, with the presence of the Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Herat and the Governor of Herat, Afghanistan’s first export shipment via the Afghanistan-Iran railway corridor was dispatched to Turkey and Europe.

The activation of this corridor, given the unique geographical location of Afghanistan and Iran, can serve as a vital bridge between Asia and Europe. Afghanistan, rich in natural resources and with significant market potential, can leverage this corridor for economic growth and foreign investment.

Additionally, Iran, as a transit country, can capitalize on this opportunity to strengthen its role in international trade and goods transit.

This corridor enhances regional stability and solidifies Iran’s position as a key transit hub in Eurasia, further elevating its role in regional and global geopolitical dynamics.
